High-performance quaternary ammonium-functionalized chitosan/graphene oxide composite aerogel for remelt syrup decolorization in sugar refining

The decolorization of remelt syrup is the most critical step in sugar refining process as it directly affects quality refined sugar. Adsorption a useful method that can be applied to decolorize syrup. A quaternary ammonium-functionalized chitosan/graphene oxide composite aerogel (GO-QACSA) was developed an effective adsorbent for removal high-molecular-weight reducing alkaline degradation products (HRSADPs), main class colorants advantages GO-QACSA remove HRSADPs attributed its well-connected 3-D network-like porous structure, nontoxicity, high hydrophilicity, and richness ammonium groups. equilibrium adsorption capacity reached 364.09 mg/g rate > 90%. exhibited ultra-fast rate. Recycling experiments indicated good renewability reusability. interaction mechanism HRSADP on studied, results revealed two layers adhered surface via electrovalent bonds formed between carboxylate On average, 2–3 ions one molecule bonded with cations GO-QACSA. Four phenomenological mathematical models, namely, External mass transfer resistance (EMTR), Internal (IMTR), combined EMTR–IMTR, active sites (AAS), were presented based best-fit isotherms. These models could used provide new insights into behaviors system.
